I had a fantastic experience My wife and I now go to Brookings whenever we can. Mostly because of how good we are treated in Brookings & our procedures have all gone so well.

Care was very good, surgeon informative, instructions and information thorough. I'm a snowbird at a home in AZ 6 months of the year. I was also in healthcare for 28 years. I'm aware of many who have the notion bigger is better and you have to go to Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, or Mayo for "good" care. When you are elsewhere in the country and realize how poor medical and hospital care is, you become very thankful for the healthcare in the upper Midwest. Part of that I believe is because of the large systems we have, so medical information is more transparent. Even though BHS is independent, it has access to Avera medical records (and possibly Sanford). There is also a very distinct difference between ownership in the upper Midwest where most hospitals/systems are not-for-profit or city/county owned. In many areas of the country (including AZ), most doctors/clinics are individual practitioners with no access to other provider's medical records, and hospitals are owned and operated by for-profit corporations. In visiting with other elderly who have wintered south, most quit doing so because of medical conditions for which they want to be close to their doctors and hospitals in Brookings and Sioux Falls. Comparisons of clinical measurements and patient satisfaction "stars" show a very different picture of what we have in eastern SD (including BHS) and scoring in other parts of the country. I was a satisfied consumer and know I can trust these providers in the future to deliver quality care.

Quick and courteous

With 3 containers of Magnesium Citrate prior to the procedure, I became quite dehydrated which made it difficult to insert the IV. The 6th try with a smaller needle was finally successful.

Everyone was very nice from the moment I walked in the hospital. I was nervous + they made me feel better by talking to me. After the surgery I spent 2 nights there. The nurses were wonderful.

Before procedure nurse talked with myself, my wife and my six year grandson. She paid attention to my grandson's questions and answered him so he could understand and also gave him a teddy bear which he was very happy to receive - very nice person.

Everyone at the hospital was top notch. Very easy check in. Nurses were wonderful. My issue was with the prep for colonoscopy. 3 people gave me what to purchase but not quantities & when to take the prep.

Every time I visit the hospital I need to give every bit of info about me - even though I was there only a few weeks ago. I think I did that 3 times in about 6 weeks. Why? I received good care.

Everyone was professional, organized and kind. I used to work at the hospital nad having inside information can be a deterrent - but it only makes me trust them more. The Brookings hospital does it's best to be the best.

Went in for hernia pain. Ended up with emergency surgery. The ER staff were amazing so was the surgeon and surgery staff. After surgery the ladies were so nice and kind I would recommend ED to everyone 1st time I had surgery here + 1st time I wasn't scared Five stars.

The procedure went very well My doctor Oey could have spoken a little slower when explaining my procedure. She talked a mile a minute. Also make sure the right the anesthesiologist comes to talk to you. You had 2, I got there older or slower one The younger one came to talk to me.

Dr. Oey was excellent.

1. Need more people who know how to insert IV. Took many tries, but my arm hurt quite a bit for almost 1 month afterward. 2. Could use better variety of pillows. Have bad neck and they didn't have adequate pillows to make me comfortable.

It took 4 tries to start the IV. I don't think nurse technique was the problem. They said a different brand of needle was ordered; they are poor quality, switch back please.

I even got something to eat

I have been a patient in many different health care facilities due to moving to husband's job. The care I received at Brookings Hospital was above and beyond, the best health care I have received anywhere. It's refreshing to know that this kind of health care still exists.
