Continuous Blood Glucose Monitoring SystemiPro_Torso_web2.jpg

Brookings Health System offers continuous blood glucose monitoring for patients who need extra help controlling their diabetes.

A continuous blood glucose monitoring system uses a tiny sensor inserted under the skin to check glucose levels in tissue fluid. A care provider at the hospital applies the sensor to the patient, which is worn for seven days and provides real-time measurements of glucose levels every five minutes. In addition, patients are asked to keep a log of their food intake and exercise.

Care providers at Brookings Health System download the data from the monitor and are able to analyze patterns and trends. By comparing the data to the food and activity log, care providers can easily pinpoint why patients may experience spikes or lows in their glucose levels. Care providers can then coach diabetics and find a plan that works best for their individual needs.

Continuous blood glucose monitoring is recommended for patients who have:

  • Been newly diagnosed as diabetic
  • Difficulty maintaining tight control of blood sugar levels
  • Hypoglycemic episodes
  • Gastroparesis
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Hemoglobin A1C levels that keep increasing for no apparent reason
