Let's Go! 5-2-1-0

5210logo.pngAccording to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 17% of children are now considered obese. Childhood obesity has been linked to diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and poor academic performance.

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, obese children between the ages of 10 and 13 are 80% more likely to become obese as an adult. To avoid becoming an obese adult, children must adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise. Brookings Health System wants to help your child avoid obesity.

Our dietitian conducts a program that introduces nutrition to children and parents called Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0. This program educates children on nutrition, staying active, and goal setting. It centers around the principle of 5-2-1-0:

5 – fruits and veggies

2 – hours or less of recreation screen time

1 – hour or more of physical activity

0 – sugary drinks, more water and low-fat milk

Children who wish to participate in the individual coaching sessions must be physician referred. They will be monitored by our registered dietitian.
