Theodosopoulos, patients at the dialysis unit housed inside Brookings Hospital and operated by Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center now have new larger, high resolution televisions enhancing the quality of their experience as they view programs during renal treatment sessions.

A long-time Brookings dialysis patient, Spiro often recommended the unit invest in new televisions for the patient chairs. To honor his wishes, his family consulted with the dialysis staff and decided to purchase six patient televisions with arms that attach to the dialysis chairs.

“Dad would be so happy,” said daughter Georgia Theodosopoulos-Lynn. “These TVs give patients something to help take their minds off the monotonous treatments.”

Spiro owned and helped establish George’s Pizza as a Brookings landmark. He was passionate about cooking and feeding people. He and his family often brought food to the dialysis staff to show their affection for the care team.

When Spiro passed away peacefully last fall, his family asked that memorials be given to the Brookings Health System Foundation to be used at the dialysis unit in Spiro’s name. More than 30 people from three states gave a total of $2,040 to the special fund.

“We are very thankful for this wonderful gift,” said Glen Geditz, dialysis regional manager. “Spiro brought so much joy to his fellow patients and to our staff. We will always remember his generosity.”

Geditz added that Avera recently upgraded dialysis patient chairs with built-in heat and massage capability and the unit is being remodeled with new window blinds, flooring and color scheme.

Friends and family gathered at the dialysis unit on June 7 to see the newly installed equipment and remember Spiro’s legacy.
