CNOR certification validates the professional achievement and high standards of practice by an individual registered nurse who provides care for patients before, during and after surgery.

Nurses who earned the CNO credentials include Operating Room and Central Service Director Candace Johnson and Operating Room Nurses Jodi Greenfield, Terri Stauffacher, Mandy Newman, Sue Mahlum and McKenzie Nielsen.

“As the only credentialing program for perioperative registered nurses, CNOR is considered the gold standard for demonstrating the skill and knowledge required of for surgical nurses,” said Johnson. “Having our OR nurses achieve and work towards CNOR credentials exhibits Brookings Health System’s commitment to providing safe and high-quality surgical care to patients.”

To be eligible for CNOR certification, a perioperative nurse must have two years and 2,400 hours of operating room experience. At least half of the hours must be in the intraoperative setting. Certification requires a nurse pass an exam covering nine surgical subject areas, including preoperative patient assessment and diagnosis, preoperative plan of care, intraoperative care, instrument processing and supply management, emergency situations, and professional accountability.
