Laboratory Technologist Sheila Schneider runs blood samples to test patient blood iron levels. Brookings Health System recently added four new blood tests to its laboratory to monitor iron levels in the blood as well as PSA.Brookings Health System in Brookings, SD, recently added four blood tests to its laboratory providing quicker diagnostic abilities to health care staff and making it more convenient for patients to monitor anemia; hemachromatosis, a condition of too much iron in the body; and prostate health locally.

“Our laboratory operates around the clock. By having these tests in-house, we speed up the turn-around time for patients and provide our health care team with timely results they need to diagnose and treat patients,” said Laboratory Director Debra Thomas.

Three of the tests, Ferritin, Iron and Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), are most frequently ordered as a group to test patients’ blood iron levels to determine if iron levels are too high or low.

The fourth test, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), is a test used to monitor the health of the prostate for either diagnostic purposes or screening.

“We have many outpatients who live in Brookings and surrounding areas who need PSA levels tested regularly as part of follow-up. Now they don’t have to travel to receive the tests,” Thomas said.

Brookings Health System’s laboratory provides the latest technology and tests for accurate and efficient lab results. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. For more information on Brookings Health System’s lab, please call (605) 696-7704.
