Education made possible by Tough Enough to Wear Pink funds

Four nurses at Brookings Health System recently earned their Chemotherapy Biotherapy certificate to help care for patients who receive chemotherapy at Brookings Health System. Pictured from left to right are Elizabeth Kuhl, Gabrielle Millard, Heather Bortnem and Jennifer Chandler. Their education was made possible by the Tough Enough to Wear Pink funds raised by the Swiftel Center and contributed to Brookings Health System Foundation. Four nurses at Brookings Health System recently earned their Oncology Nursing Society/Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONC/ONCC) Chemotherapy Biotherapy certification to help care for patients who receive chemotherapy at Brookings Health System’s outpatient treatment area and as inpatients on the medical-surgical floor.

Emergency Department RNs Jennifer Chandler and Heather Bortnem and Medical-Surgical Floor RNs Gabrielle Millard and Elizabeth Kuhl each recently completed educational coursework and passed examination to earn their certification.

“The oncology education learned by these outstanding nurses helps Brookings Health System to deliver high-quality outpatient chemotherapy treatments,” said Medical Surgical and ED Director Karen Weber. “Their expertise makes them our go-to resource when helping cancer patients receive their needed treatments close to home.”

The certification confirms each nurse is equipped with the skills to safely administer chemotherapy and biotherapy agents to cancer patients while providing the quality care demanded by Brookings Health System. The coursework prepares and reinforces critical information and evidence to manage side effects and adverse events related to chemotherapy and biotherapy administration.

The nurses’ education and examination fees were paid by funds raised by the Swiftel Center’s Tough Enough to Wear Pink annual campaign. For the past nine years the Swiftel Center, managed by VenueWorks, has coordinated the Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign and works with Brookings Health System Foundation to effectively disburse the funds.
