Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Laura Crooks assists Dorothy Schaller with occupational therapy rehabilitation.During the month of April, Brookings Health System is recognizing the significant contributions occupational therapy has made to the field of medicine by celebrating National Occupational Therapy Month.

Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help people across their lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recover from injury to regain skills, and providing skilled services to older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes.

Occupational therapy services may include comprehensive evaluations of the client’s home and other environments, such as the workplace or school; recommendations for adaptive equipment and training in its use; and guidance and education for family members and caregivers. Occupational therapists have a holistic perspective, working with the person to adapt to their environment to meet their needs.

Occupational therapy is one of the comprehensive therapy services offered at Brookings Health System. For more information on how you or a loved one may benefit from occupational therapy, please visit www.brookingshealth.org/OT or call (605) 696-8821.
