Avera McKennan Selected to Operate Dialysis Unit
Dialysis Housed at Brookings Health System to be an Open Unit
Brookings Health System officially announced today it has extended a lease agreement to Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center of Sioux Falls to operate the kidney dialysis unit housed within the hospital. July 1 is the anticipated transition date.
“The timeframe in which Avera McKennan was willing to transfer the unit was a key factor in our decision,” said CEO and President Jason Merkley. “In addition, an Avera nephrologist, Dr. Arvin Santos, currently holds an outreach clinic in Brookings. Also, the relationship between Brookings Health System and Avera Medical Group Brookings by means of our active medical staff played a role in the decision.”
Avera McKennan has agreed to make the center an open unit, meaning that any nephrologist, regardless of facility affiliation, may admit and treat patients there.
At the end of June, Prairie Lakes Healthcare System of Watertown will relinquish its position as operator of the dialysis unit and has agreed to help Brookings Health System during the transition period.
“We are very grateful to Prairie Lakes leadership and dialysis staff for their assistance during this changeover and thank them for the high quality care and service they provided to dialysis patients in the Brookings area over the past nine years,” said Merkley.
Avera McKennan has offered positions to all current staff at the dialysis unit and is currently working on completing logistics to transfer patient care. The goal is to achieve a seamless transition between Avera McKennan and Prairie Lakes with no impact on patients currently served at the unit.
